Houdini Clarke Meets NFL Champ Freddie Mitchell

When you think of small dogs that dont shed, who comes to mind first?  Houdini Clarke, of course!

Houdini, has been busy as usual, and recently he had the opportunity to meet NFL Champ Freddie Mitchell.  Freddie played for the Philadelphia Eagles for several seasons, played in the Super Bowl and is training for a come back in football.

FredEX offered the "Hoots" several training tips and in turn, Houdini shared a few with Freddie ... lol!  Houdini is well known for being a "chick" magnet and he passed on a few of those tips to Freddie ... oh MY!

Doctor Energizer Pulses Houdini Clarke PER2000

Houdini Clarke makes history once again as the first Maltese to pulsed by a PER2000 Pulsed Energy Replenisher. Doctor Energizer visited our home and demonstrated to Houdini how simple, painless and non-invasive it is to use.

Houdini enjoyed his session and was calm throughout. After Doctor Energizer left, six year old Houdini was playing like a puppy again!

The PER2000 is used on thoroughbred racehorses and greyhounds before they race. The PEMF technology boosts the energy and improves their performance. In fact, Albertus Maximus, a racehorse was pulsed just prior to his winning the Breeder's Cup and then again before the Donn's Handicapp.

Nothing is too good for Houdini, the star of small dogs that don't shed!

Houdini Clarke Makes History - Congratulates President Obama!

Houdini Clarke, the first Maltese to make a run for the White House, congratulated President Barack Obama on his win ... Houdini is now considering a possible cabinet post .... to piddle on, that is ... lol!

Houdini ran on the small dogs that don't shed ticket and quite surprisingly garnered quite a bit of support. He is still hoping to make a comeback in 2012 and is already planning his strategy with members of his immediate staff.

Small Dogs Need Grooming, Too!

Houdini is one of the small dogs that don't shed ... he is the perfect example that grooming is essential for these little guys.

Maltese have hair, not fur like most dogs ... in other words there is no undercoat and he must be combed, brushed, trimmed and cut, or his hair will continue to grow, like humans, until their hair reaches the floor.

We call these grooming sessions laughingly a "spa day" .... everyone in the neighborhood knows about Houdini's spa days ... lol!

The routine begins with a flowbee cut ... now I don't know if you remember the flowbee from TV, but these things are great! They hook up to your vacuum and it hair is literally sucked into the trimming head ... it has several spacers that allow you to trim as much or little as you want off your pet. The really neat part is there is no messy hair flying around ... too cool!

Actually their are human and pet flowbee models and we have the human model because BigAl began using one on his head many years ago! For the Pet Flowbee you can click here ... it is worth its weight in gold ... do you know how much money they want to groom a Maltese these days? YIKES! In my area it runs about $55 per session. You can pay for one grooming or buy one of these "bad boys" and have a lifetime of use!

Next on the menu of grooming services is the scissor clip for around the face, eyes and paws ... it is very important to make sure that the hair between the pads on the paws are clipped short ... paws that never dry out can get a yeast infection.

Houdini's very favorite part of spa day is the bath ... NOT .... I don't know why he hates this part so much. We always use warm water, he gets a wonderful massage and he has our total attention for at least 10 minutes while the shampoo whitens and brightens his coat, but alas, he would rather do just about anything than to hop into the sink. We use a special soap for white dogs Synergy Groomer's Blend Ultra White Shampoo, 17.3 Ounce this stuff works like a charm ... it keeps Houdini in dog show condition! A quick rinse with conditioner ... remember he has hair, not fur and he is ready for the blow dryer!

Once dry, we finish up the session with the toe nails. The best thing that we have run into is the nifty pedipaws gadget that actually files the nail rather than cutting. How many times have you accidentally cut into the quick because you couldn't see it .... well, this totally eliminates that ... the PediPaws Pet Nail Trimmer is the BEST!

Small dogs that don't shed are truly the best, but they do require attention to look their best

ShihTzus Pack a Punch- Small Dogs that don't Shed ...

Shih Tzus are are small dogs that don't shed. They are known for being sturdy, attentive, energetic, responsive and they are best suited to being companion dogs. Usually ShihTzus are generally easy-going and affectionate. When in a playful mood, Shih Tzus can be feisty and mischievous. Because they are alert and attentive dogs, they make good watchdogs who may bark a lot. Shih Tzus love attention and being spoiled. They are very clever and can be trained, although they are known to be stubborn and a trainer consequently needs to be very patient. Shih Tzus generally get along well with other pets and older children.

Letter from an UNKOWN Source!

Post VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - pet nose height.

Dear Dogs,

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine and try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years -- your attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear dog, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit and Like to Complain About Our Pets:

1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'niture.
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, they are an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember, Dogs are better than kids because they:

1. Eat less
2. Don't ask for money all the time
3 Are easier to train
4. Normally come when called
5. Never ask to drive the car
6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends
7. Don't smoke or drink
8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions
9. Don't want to wear your clothes
10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and...
11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children

Small Dogs that dont Shed, Cockapoo dle-doo

The Cockapoo is a cross between a cocker spaniel and a miniature poodle. It is a hybrid dog that is sometimes referred to as a “spoodle” or “cockerpoo” and is one of the small dogs that don’t shed. The US began breeding them in the 1960’s they can range in size from 6 pounds to about 20 pounds and come in all sorts of color variations.

In general, the Cockapoo is quite sweet natured and affectionate. An alert sociable dog, the Cockapoo strives to please its owner and gets along well with children when under supervision. Training should begin young and there are times when jealousy rears its head if their owners pay too much attention to other animals. These little guys are quite intelligent and are the perfect small pet dog for companionship.

These dogs are ideal for someone that suffers with allergies as they are one of the no shed dog breeds. The coat of the Cockapoo will vary from dog to dog. Some will have the sleeker coat of the spaniel, while others may have curlier, coarser fur like a Poodle. For many Cockapoo's, their hair will be a mixture somewhere between the two. This means that daily brushing will be required in order to keep the hair healthy and mat free and clipped at least once a year to maintain their coat.

As with a lot of smaller dogs they tend to be quite long-lived, and it's not unusual for Cockapoos to live to 15 years or more. When you are looking for small dogs that don’t shed, be sure to put the Cockapoo high on your list!

Small Dogs that don't Shed - Houdini Reports!

Small dogs that don't shed are my very favorite dogs! This is Houdini Clarke, a 5 year old Maltese, getting ready to report the latest weather news from the Isles of Capri, Florida. Tropical Strom Fay made landfall about 5 miles from our home Monday and while the damage was minor, it is still worthy of a quick report for the BARK news!

Houdini, like any Maltese, is a bit vain and is checking with his camera crew to make sure the shots are set up correctly and that his hair and makeup are in order. Maltese are no shed dogs so he is really only concerned that he will have a handsome closeup shot ... LOL!

Houdini reports that the electricity has finally been turned on again after two days so he can now stay cool in the AC'd house and the boil water notice has been lifted. He can once again enjoy his favorite reverse osmosis water without it being boiled first.

This is Houdini Clarke reporting to you from Florida .... cut ... that's a wrap!

Small dogs that don't shed .... Houdini reports that they are the BEST!

Small Dogs that don't Shed - Yorkies are a lot of FUN!

When you talk about small dogs that don't shed, the Yorkshire Terrier has to be included. These little dynamos weighing in under 7 pounds are quite unaware of their small size and will guard their home enthusiastically.

Small dogs that don't shed can be a lot of FUN! The Yorkshire Terrier in the video is Ivey and she is simply a little love bug! Loving, friendly and a great companion. She has traveled to Europe with her family and is never a problem.

Yorkies do not shed, but they do require grooming and a lot of it if you are going to let their hair grow long..... otherwise, if you keep them cut short just a quick comb every other day should do it.

Caution should be taken if you have very small children as they are very fragile dogs and could be hurt easily .... on the reverse side Yorkies can be a bit nippy with very young kids.

Small dogs that don't shed? Yorkies are a terrific option!

Small Dogs that Don't Shed - How about Havanese?

Dogs that don’t shed are so great because you are not always vacuuming and sweeping up hair covered furniture and carpet. Small dogs that don’t shed are even better because there is even less to care for and feed. When people ask what kind of “no shed dogs” are out there, you might want to consider a Havanese.

The Havanese is a small sturdy dog with a lot of charm. They can come in many different colors and weighs in at about 7-13 pounds. The long silky coat may be shown either brushed or corded. A resident of Havana for three centuries, it is the National Dog of Cuba. The Havanese carries its head high, plumed tail carried loosely over the back, and a springy gait, it makes his outline unmistakable. When he is shown in the ring, the Havanese should look in excellent condition, but never so elaborately coifed as to preclude an impromptu romp in the leaves.

This little dog of Havana became a family dog extraordinaire, playmate of children, watchdog, and herder of the family poultry flock. During the Cuban revolution, a handful of them found their way into this country and by the end of the 1970’s a new gene pool was being built up. Pretty COOL!

While these small dogs don’t shed, they do need frequent brushing and combing, or they will become a matted mess. If you can't commit to the brushing, you have to commit to frequent trimming to keep the coat short, neat, and healthy.

These little guys are great watch dogs and are quick to sound the alarm if something new is going on, so good training is a must. In addition, they can be difficult to housebreak so consistency is a must.

Along with their considerable charm, Havanese also come with a high price tag, so don’t be surprised with a price tag over a thousand dollars. As always when you go to purchase a new dog, due your homework and spend time with the breeder and puppies.

So when you are looking for small dogs that dont shed, perhaps you should put a Havanese on your to "look at" list.

Small Dogs that don't Shed - Bichon Frise

When you talk about small dogs that don't shed, many people think of the Bichon Frise. They are are adorable, full of fun and they have a wonderful temperament and are full of curiosity. Bichon's are full of energy, love to be the center of attention and are very intelligent. Yet, they are just as content nestled in your lap while you watch television or read a book.

Of course, not all are alike, and it may take time to find one just right for you. It is so wonderful when you find that perfect Bichon Frise puppy that makes your heart melt. Bichons do have a bit of an independent streak in them; but with positive reinforcement and consistency in training, you can have a delightful, well behaved companion.

Sometimes it is tough to find the perfect dog for your family, especially if have any small kids. Most parents have a tendency to shy away from smaller dogs because of reputations certain small breeds have for snapping. This is not so with the delightful Bichon Frise. You will find yourself with a dog that adores attention and socializing.

Bichons are white dogs, but they may be born with cream, buff or apricot on the ears which usually disappears by the time they are a year old. Both male and female dogs range in weight from 10 - 18 pounds.

The Bichon Frise is a cross between the Barbet water spaniel and the Poodle. The Bichon was bounced around the Mediterranean countries before eventually ending up in France. The name is French, but that accent is all Anglo-Saxon!

Bichon Frise dogs definitely have the poodle type coat with more curls than Shirley Temple could shake a stick at. Two little black round eyes and a button nose give the face so much expression. Their tail curls up, making it look like they strut as they walk.

Something to consider before getting a Bichon Frise is grooming. While the Bichon does not shed and is considered to be hypo allergenic, they do require a lot of grooming and can be high maintenance in that area. It is best if their coat is brushed out on a daily basis, but weekly is a must to avoid tangles and matted spots. Professional grooming is highly recommended every four to six weeks. Some owners choose the “puppy cut” look, which keeps the coat very short.

The Bichon is a great little dog, but it is always important to do your due diligence before making a final decision, especially if you are looking for a one of the small dogs that don't shed. You may find it fun as well as educational as you read up on their history, temperaments and appearance.

Small Dogs that dont Shed - Best Friend!

A shedding dog can really be a problem for many people. There are many reasons for wanting to have a non shed dog, but of course the number one reason is allergies. You may be in love with your puppy, but if every time he is near you sneeze, cough or have other allergic reactions then you know that this is not the dog for you.

There are several hypoallergenic dog breeds are more suitable for dog owners and they are less likely to trigger an allergic reaction. No dog is 100% allergy free, but you need to judge each individual allergic reaction and how it occurs. Before adopting a dog you need to spend a minimum of 30 minutes confined to a small area with the dog, evaluate for any allergic reaction, instead of getting any allergies, after the dog is welcomed into your home.

All dogs have different coat types and the ones that shed the least are the single coated dog breeds. I say shed the least, because all dogs, except for the hairless ones loose hair, but the single coated dog hair is something that has to be combed or brushed to remove the lost hairs versus the double coated dogs whose hair and fur flies all over the house, furniture and your clothes. The single coated dog has hair very similar to humans, where the hair comes out and is removed by the hair brush. In addition, these single coated dogs really do not have dander. Dander is one of the leading causes of allergic reactions.

The small dogs that don’t shed are usually the best for home owners that are not extremely active or for apartment dwellers that don’t have the room for a large dog to romp around. If you have a toy poodle, Maltese or Bichon Frise, they can get their exercise right in the house running from room to room which is also a big plus for allergy sufferers. They don’t have to go outside and subject themselves to the various seasonal pollens in the air.

Small breeds are also great because caring for them is cheaper as they don’t eat as much and can be a lot easier to handle for elderly folks. It is easier to travel with a small dog as many will fit into a bag that you carry on your shoulder or a small carrier that will fit under an airplane seat. If you are traveling in the car, they certainly take up much less room.

Never underestimate the “guard dog” abilities of the smaller breeds. Many of them are as aggressive as large dogs and most make great watch dogs. They know when something is not right in their area and they aren’t afraid to tell you.

Some of the top small dogs that don’t shed are the:

  • · Maltese
  • · Toy Poodle
  • · Bichon Frise
  • · Shih Tzu
  • · Yorkshire Terrier
  • · Miniature Schnauzer

These are just a few and in the coming weeks we will blog about all of them and their special attributes! One thing is for sure, when it comes to small dogs that dont shed, once you have one you will never want to go back!
